22-year-old Mathias “Mac” Christensen has this season been one of the standouts in the team’s midfield, where he has played almost every match since arriving in the summer.
In addition to his calm overview and role as a playmaker, he is also the team’s current top scorer with seven goals across competitions.
This season’s performances have therefore not gone unnoticed by Morten Rutkjær, who is the head coach of the Greenland men’s national team on a daily basis. Greenland is not yet recognized by FIFA, but is a member of CONIFA (Confederation of Independent Football Associations). Therefore, the training camp in Turkey also does not offer the most familiar opponents, but despite this there is still something to look forward to for the midfielder.
“It’s the first time I’m involved, so of course I’m excited, and it’s definitely something I’m looking forward to. I actually don’t know that much yet beyond the departure date and that we are going to play against Turkmenistan. Right now the focus is on finishing the season well here at home.”
Mathias Christensen will join the national team camp on 3 June, as FC Helsingør’s final league match must be played before he can leave. FC Helsingør face Næstved BK on 1 June.
Mathias Christensen has been given the opportunity to be selected on the basis of his father’s background, who was born and raised in Greenland.
“I have never been to Greenland myself, but I have family up there, and especially my father is of course very excited!”
After the national team camp, Mathias returns home for vacation and preparation for next season.
