2. On Whit Sunday, FC Helsingør were to try to put a spoke in the wheel of HB Køge, who appear to be the team that will take the final ticket to next season's NordicBet Liga.
Head coach Alvaro Santos had to be creative in his preparations in the week leading up to the match, as several of the team's regular players were either struggling with injuries or were unavailable due to suspensions. This meant that several young talents were included in the squad, among them Tobias Elmelund, who was given a place in the back line from the start.
Køge came best out of the dressing room and already showed teeth after just 30 seconds with a dangerous long-range shot, which fortunately hit the post. After the shock, we fought our way better back into the match, and shortly before the break it was the young Elmelund who found space at the back of the box after a well-delivered corner kick and headed FC Helsingør into the half-time lead.
From the start of the second half, the scorer got a new side partner in the back line, as Frederik Helstrup had to be substituted and make way for Jacob Vadstrup. The communication and understanding were lacking, and HB Køge took advantage of their first chance after the break and equalized to 1-1.
The rest of the match did not show much improvement, and the air went completely out of the balloon when Køge, with 15 minutes left, scored first to 2-1 and shortly after to 3-1. HB Køge therefore looks like a team that is assured survival for next season.
Our own boys must try to make amends on Sunday, when the team for the last time this season runs onto the pitch to FC Helsingør's anthem over the loudspeakers at Helsingør Stadium.
We will chase victory until the very end, and we hope our brave fans will help send the boys well on their way toward next season.
Sunday's match starts at 14.00 – the opponent is called B.93.
