After several dominant performances at the Olympics 2020 and in the NordicBet Liga, the two All Whites have extended their contracts by two years.
HELSINGØR (31. August 2021) – FC Helsingør announced today that they have signed new contracts with forwards Elijah Just and Callum McCowatt through the summer of 2024. The two New Zealand national team players have combined for seven goals and three assists this season, helping the Helsingør club to the top of the NordicBet Liga table with 7 matches unbeaten from the start.
“We are pleased to continue our journey with both Elijah and Callum,” says FC Helsingør sporting director Brian Gellert. “Both players came to the club at a very young age and have developed into dynamic attacking players who have made a fantastic start in the league. We are happy that they have decided to commit their future to Helsingør, and we are excited about the future together.”
Just, 21 years old, is a fast and technically gifted winger with three goals and one assist in five matches this season. Just joined FC Helsingør in 2019, where he has scored nine goals and registered two assists during his time at the club. Just played all four matches for New Zealand in their run to the quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, where he assisted a goal against Honduras in the group stage.
“I could not be happier to have received a new contract with FC Helsingør,” said Just. “I have had a fantastic experience here at the club and am happy to be able to develop as a player and help the club in its biggest moments, such as our promotion from 2. division, last year’s final placing in the promotion group stage and this year’s fantastic unbeaten start. The possibilities are endless for the team, and I want to continue playing my part.”
McCowatt, 22 years old, joined FC Helsingør a year after Just and added an attacking element for both club and country in 2021. In total, McCowatt has scored seven goals in 29 matches in Denmark – including four goals in four consecutive matches, each of which was either a match-winner or an equalizer. McCowatt played in all four of New Zealand's Olympic matches in Tokyo before returning to Helsingør.
“It is great to receive a new contract with the club, as we are all striving for our goals this year,” says McCowatt. “It shows that the club has confidence in me and helps me as a player focus on playing, scoring and winning matches. Helsingør has felt like home from the very first moment I arrived, and I look forward to seeing what great things we can do this season and beyond.”
At the top of the NordicBet Liga table after seven matches, FC Helsingør (6-1-0, 19 points) goes into the international break in September with two points down to second place. Helsingør faces Skjold on Wednesday in the second round of the Sydbank Pokalen (Kickoff 18.00 | TICKETS), before Helsingør returns to league play on 12 September at home against Hvidovre.
