FC Helsingør have signed New Zealand striker Callum McCowatt, who arrives on a free transfer, after most recently having played for Wellington Phoenix in the top Australian division. The 21-year-old Callum McCowatt trained with FC Helsingør last summer, but ultimately chose to stay in New Zealand, even though his two old teammates Eli Just and Dalton Wilkins made the trip to Denmark.
That is why sports director Brian Gellert is especially pleased that it has now been possible to get the young striker under contract.
– We have had Callum at the top of our list for a long time, and we would have liked to have had him under contract already last year. He comes to us through the network we have between our American ownership group and Olé Football Academy in New Zealand, through which we also brought in Dalton Wilkins and Elijah Just.
– We have kept a close eye on Callum during his time in Wellington, as he is a player from a level we normally cannot sign players from. When he then had a contract expiry and also wanted to come to Europe, things came together for both him and us. With a player of his class it was a no-brainer to act. Callum is one of the biggest talents to have come to Europe from Australian football in many years, and he is a player we expect a great deal from.
Callum McCowatt himself is happy to have come to Denmark:
– It felt like the right time for me to come to Europe and test myself outside New Zealand and Australia. FC Helsingør and I have been in dialogue for a longer period, and of course it is flattering that they have been interested in signing me for a long time. I have spoken with Dalton and Eli, and they both highly recommended FC Helsingør, and it is nice that they are here to help me settle into the squad and get used to playing in Denmark.
– I have only been here for a couple of days now, but I can feel that both the squad and the club have moved forward since I was here last year. There are better training facilities now, and the squad seems stronger both football-wise and in terms of togetherness. I am very much looking forward to getting started.
Callum McCowatt has been given number 8 at FCH.
