FC Helsingør has signed a contract with the experienced American center forward Christopher “Chris” Cortez. The 31-year-old striker arrives on a free transfer after a year in Thai football with Chonburi FC and Ayutthaya United.
In the USA, Chris Cortez has been affiliated with Chivas USA in MLS, as well as Orange County FC and Phoenix Rising FC in USLC, the second-highest American division. Cortez had his best season in USLC in 2018, where he scored 18 goals in 33 matches. Chris Cortez has scored a total of 48 goals in 133 matches in USLC.
Sporting director Matt Barnes warmly welcomes the big striker:
– Chris Cortez is an excellent addition to FCH’s squad, and we are very excited to be able to bring him to the club. The 1,93 cm tall striker is exactly the type of player we have been looking for in this transfer window. Chris has proven himself as a goal scorer and was top scorer for Phoenix in 2018, where he had a record season at the club. The addition of a “classic” 9’er gives us some physical presence among the front runners, and his goal-scoring instinct will hopefully provide the club with a lot of the goals we have been missing a bit.
– Chris Cortez has a unique ability to receive the ball high up the pitch and lay it off to a player like Jeppe Kjær, and he can also play as a more classic striker alongside someone like Nicolas Mortensen. His versatility is rarely seen in such physically big players.
– Chris is very motivated to prove himself in Europe, and he is a player who can contribute to the first-team squad from day one.
