FC Helsingør have signed the 22-year-old Swiss centre-back Brandon Onkony, after he has trained with the squad in recent weeks. Onkony joins on a free transfer, after most recently playing for Hobro IF in the Superliga.
Sporting director Brian Gellert says the club has had an eye on Onkony for some time:
– He has been on our list for a long time and what we have seen from him over the past few weeks, where he has trained up here, has confirmed to us that he was the right man for our central defence. He is big, physically strong and fast, and he is also good on the ball. He has been scouted for the way we want to play football, and I think those of our fans who have seen him in our recent training matches can confirm that he already looks like an addition.
Onkony himself saw FC Helsingør as a really good match:
– I wanted to be part of a project that suits the way I want to play, and FC Helsingør was perfect. I want to help move the ball forward and use my strengths as a ball-playing defender. Even though I am physically strong and good in the air, I also have strengths in the build-up play, where I can play it forward with both feet.
I think there seems to be a really good environment up here, with a good atmosphere in the dressing room, and I have been well received by both the guys in the dressing room and the coaching staff, so it has been easy to get into the team.
– I am looking forward to playing in what may be the strongest NordicBet Liga ever. First we need to find our level and set the bar, and then I think we have a squad that in the longer term can do well in the better half of the table. I’m very much looking forward to getting started.
Brandon Onkony was born and raised in Switzerland, but spent most of his youth years in Canada before Hobro brought him to Denmark in the spring of 2019. He has been given a two-year contract, and takes over shirt number 5.
